What is the Ketogenic Diet?

Ketogenic Diet Macronutrient Ratios

To reach ketosis, the standard ketogenic diet calls for a macronutrient ratio of:

  • 70-80% fat
  • 15-25% protein
  • 5-10% total carbs

Here’s how to determine your keto macros in 5 simple steps:

  1. Calculate your total daily calorie needs for weight loss. Use a TDEE calculator online to determine the number of calories you need each day to maintain your current weight, then deduct 20-25%. The result is your calorie target.
  2. Set your net carb limit. Net carbs are total carbs minus fiber. Standard keto limits net carbs to 20-50 grams per day. Lower carb targets produce faster results.
  3. Determine your protein needs. 0.6 to 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass is recommended. Lean body mass equals current weight minus body fat percentage.
